Hello! My name is Roland Lopez. I’ve been a bonsai practitioner for almost 3 years now. I love collecting trees and also purchasing material to craft into a miniature representation of trees in nature. I also love starting them from seed! Creating bonsai from seed means from the very beginning...

TTSBE Cedar Elm

Photo by Joey McCoy | @joeybonsai

The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit has a collection of bonsai trees which they tend to, develop, and present at bonsai events. The pictured TTSBE Cedar Elm is an example of the work Hawk Eye can perform on collection owned trees of Imperial size. The blog post contains a series of photos which outline the scope of work performed on this specimen over the course of the last two years. This tree has significant history in association with the TTSBE Exhibit. The above photo was taken in April of 2019 after the first flush of Spring growth was pruned back and removal of unnecessary deadwood. The work was conducted by TTSBE Members and Hawk Eye Bonsai members.

Austin Tree Rescue - Round Rock Boxwoods

Photo by Brandon Baldauf | @wizardsknow

A photo of the front of the house after we removed the Japanese Boxwoods. We were contacted by a homeowner in the Round Rock area who was planning on removing their landscape shrubs. The homeowner was familiar with the idea of bonsai and that there are groups of bonsai enthusiasts in the Austin area who will remove landscape plants from properties. He requested that we leave a tree for him to start on the bonsai journey, which is why there is a single Boxwood remaining.

This is a photo of a mighty Cedar Elm in July 2019 after it pushed out Spring growth. Really excited to see the tree wake up this year and respond well to the location in the nursery. The tree really enjoys consistent watering and fertilization.

Another happy homeowner! A photo of the front of the house after we removed the Japanese Boxwoods. We found the owner on Craig's List looking to remove the shrubs, reached out and scheduled a time to help! The trees on the left hand side of the picture were cemented in and the homeowner was good to leave them there.... Keep Austin Weird!?

Austin Tree Rescue - NW. Austin Boxwoods

This property was really close to where most of us live in North West Austin, so it was a really convenient trip to the site. We found the owner on Craig's List looking to remove the shrubs, reached out and scheduled a time to help!

This corner was covered with huge overgrown Japanese Boxwoods... now you can see where the sidewalk ends.

Austin Tree Rescue - S. Austin Bald Cypress

Photo by Brandon Baldauf | @wizardsknow

Pictured are the trees relocated to Brandon's house in the large tub. This was a unique tree rescue! We found an ad on Craig's List indicating a family was leaving Austin and needed to find a home for their Bald Cypress trees. In the 90s, they visited the Frio River in South Central Texas which is known for it's huge Bald Cypress on the banks of the river. While there, they collected a few small saplings to remember the location and brought them back to their property in Austin.
